Mary Fedden
Mary Fedden (1915-2012) was a British artist known for her whimsical, colorful paintings of still life, landscape, and domestic scenes. Her unique style was influenced by the British Neo-Romantic movement and the post-war art world, but she was not afraid to experiment with different techniques and mediums to create her distinctive works.
Born in Bristol, England, Fedden attended the Slade School of Fine Art in London in the 1930s, where she met and married the artist Julian Trevelyan. During World War II, the couple lived in Durham, where Fedden worked as a teacher and began to develop her own artistic style. After the war, they moved to London, where Fedden became involved in the burgeoning art scene.
Fedden’s paintings often feature everyday objects such as vases, fruit, and flowers, arranged in playful and unexpected ways. Her use of color is striking, with bold, bright hues contrasting against muted backgrounds. She was also known for her landscapes, which often depicted the English countryside or the Mediterranean coast, and her depictions of domestic life, such as cats lounging in sunlit windowsills.
Throughout her career, Fedden exhibited widely and received numerous awards and honors, including being elected to the Royal Academy of Arts in 1992. Her work is held in many public and private collections, including the Tate Gallery in London.
